This data visualization has done a good job in illustrating how young voters in Britain gave the Labor Party a big advance in the general election. In the visualization, it is clear to us that the age factor played a significant part in the election in Britain in 2017. By dividing the population into age groups from 18 to 65+, the visualization has demonstrated the voting information of different age groups in the UK, as well as their voting preferences, namely, Labor, Conservatives, Liberal Democrats, and UKip. By looking at it, we can easily distinguish which age group was the most significant to each Party because there was a clear signal of increase or decrease on the votes. For instance, the age group 18-24 has voted for Labor, with the increase from around 42% in 2015 to over 60% in 2017. With this feature in place, we can clearly infer the importance of young voters to Labor Party, giving them a significant boost. Despite its effectiveness to express the significance of the young voters, this visualization also has its drawbacks. It could have been better if there were precise figures in the chart to show what exact number of young voters voted for Labor Party, instead of simply giving a trend of increase or decrease, so that more credibility could be added. This visualization would have been better if it were bar chart because the bar chart will precisely show the audience the significance of young voters to each Party through vivid numbers. In addition to that, this visualization is not as interactive as it should be. An interactive chart will enable the audience to engage in the dialogue so that they can utilize this chart to decide if one particular age group will determine the fate of any Party in Britain. In order to achieve this, the chart could use emojis to indicate whether this age group is crucial in the general election in Britain.
Hello David, I think that you did very good job on your analysis! I like the strengths and weaknesses that you have found, and your reasoning behind your findings were very good also. I agree that this graph would have been better if it was a bar chart because it would be easier to understand. I think that the images that you used in the blog post could have been a bit larger because it is very hard to see anything from these two images. I really enjoyed reading your work well done!
